Nadeem Ahmed is Wakefield through and through. And he has a plan to make Wakefield an even better place.
1. Investing in skills training for Wakefield residents.
We’ve helped 1,680 Wakefield residents find apprenticeships since 2019. But we need to go further. So I’ll make the case to ministers for a new skills college in Wakefield, like the one they’re creating in Shipley. Helping more residents get on in life.
2. Supporting local businesses and creating new jobs
We’ve secured new investment to revamp the town centre, helping us attract new businesses and clamp down on aggressive begging. I’ll work with the government to see this plan through, bring in new businesses and help residents find good jobs with decent pay
3. Cracking down on crime with 589 new police officers
The government has recruited 589 new police for West Yorkshire, and Wakefield needs its fair share. So I’ll work with ministers to get those new police on patrol in crime hotspots, cutting antisocial behaviour in the town centre and making our streets safer.
4. Improving local transport
The government’s investing £70 million in West Yorkshire buses to deliver cheaper and more frequent services. But that’s just the first step. I’ll work with ministers to secure more investment in local roads, so we repair potholes and make our journeys safer.
5. Building homes that residents can actually afford
For too long, the Labour council has failed to build homes that residents can actually afford. So I’ll work with residents to hold councillors to account, making sure we get the homes we need in the right places. Helping more residents get on the housing ladder.
6. Supporting our local NHS
The government’s investing over £74 million in hospitals across the area, helping to refurbish facilities and upgrade equipment. If elected, I’ll work with local GPs and health ministers to clear the Covid backlog and increase access to GP appointments.
7. Taking back control of immigration and stopping small boats
We’ve introduced an Australian-style points-based immigration system, making things fairer for local people by only taking workers our economy needs. We are also reforming our asylum system and stopping small boats through our partnership with Rwanda.
